About ISC Class 11 Modern English
ISC Class 11 Modern English introduces you to a new selection of literature. The syllabus is divided into three parts. You will study short stories, poems, and a play. Each section offers a different way to understand human experiences and ideas.
The collection of short stories is called ‘Perspectives’. It contains varied tales from different authors. R.K. Narayan’s ‘Lawley Road’ presents a story from a familiar Indian setting. ‘The Landlady’ by Roald Dahl is a story with a sense of mystery. You will also read ‘Most Beautiful’ by Ruskin Bond and an excerpt from a biography of Ratan Tata. Charles Lamb’s ‘Dream-Children: A Reverie’ offers a gentle, reflective piece. These stories explore themes of daily life, suspense, and personal history.
The poetry section, ‘Reflections’, presents poems on many subjects. Dilip Chitre’s ‘Father Returning Home’ paints a picture of urban loneliness. ‘Life Doesn’t Frighten Me’ by Maya Angelou speaks about inner strength. Donna Ashworth’s ‘Sadness Comes’ looks at an emotion we all feel. You will also study ‘A Prayer for My Daughter’ by W.B. Yeats and ‘Bora Ring’ by Judith Wright. These poems use language to express deep feelings and thoughts.
For drama, you will read the first two acts of George Bernard Shaw’s play, ‘Pygmalion’. The story introduces Professor Henry Higgins, an expert in phonetics, and Eliza Doolittle, a young woman who sells flowers. Higgins makes a wager that he can transform Eliza’s speech and manners. This will allow her to appear as a high-society lady. These initial acts establish the characters and the central conflict of the play.
