NBSE Class 9 English textbook
The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) prescribes a range of chapters across prose, poetry, and drama for Class 9 English. These chapters introduce students to a variety of themes, writing styles, and literary devices. To help students prepare effectively for their exams, detailed study resources have been provided, including grammar worksheets and more.
The prose chapters in the NBSE Class 9 English syllabus include ‘Rip Van Winkle’ by Washington Irving, ‘Dr. T. Ao’ by Dr. Senti Longkumer, ‘Toasted English’ by R.K. Narayan, ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens, and ‘A Simple Philosophy’ by Chief Seattle.
‘Rip Van Winkle’ tells the story of a friendly yet lazy man named Rip who falls asleep for 20 years after drinking magical liquor offered to him by ghostly figures. When he wakes up, he finds his village completely changed. ‘Dr. T. Ao’ is a biographical account of Talimeren Ao, the first captain of independent India’s football team. ‘Toasted English’ by renowned Indian author R.K. Narayan highlights how English varies across countries and advocates for India’s own brand of the language.
‘A Christmas Carol’, the famous work by Charles Dickens, is the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve who show him visions of his past, present, and future to bring about a change of heart. ‘A Simple Philosophy’ presents a letter by Chief Seattle written in 1860 in response to the US government’s offer to buy tribal lands.
The poetry chapters prescribed by NBSE for Class 9 include ‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’ by Thomas Campbell, ‘Peace’ by H.W. Longfellow, ‘The Echoing Green’ by William Blake, and ‘Mirror’ by Nini Lungalang.
‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’ tells the tragic story of a chieftain eloping with a Scottish lord’s daughter, who drowns along with the chieftain and boatman while trying to cross a raging lake. ‘Peace’ by Longfellow advocates for universal brotherhood and describes a utopian world where there are no wars. ‘The Echoing Green’ joyfully describes children playing on a green field and how the elderly observers are reminded of their own childhood. ‘Mirror’ by Nini Lungalang explores the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter who find similarities between each other.
The drama chapter included in the Class 9 English syllabus is ‘The Bishop’s Candlesticks’ by Norman McKinnel. This play is based on the theme that love and kindness are more powerful than violence and tells the story of a convict who breaks into a bishop’s house but is treated with empathy by the bishop.
The prose chapters introduce students to different literary styles through authors belonging to various cultural contexts. The poetry chapters analyse important themes using poetic devices. The drama chapter brings literature to life while teaching an important moral lesson.
Together, the range of chapters and accompanying study material provide a robust course for NBSE Class 9 English students to develop their reading, writing, thinking, and analytical skills. Systematic preparation using these resources can effectively equip students to perform well in their exams.
